Too often we make things harder than they really are. Improving workplace performance should start with a clear definition of the problem in terms of the present and desired levels of performance. This performance gap should be supplemented by setting a reasonable goal that serves as a milestone, tracking our progress in closing the gap.

Each time I hear or read a reference to a “systems approach,” I feel a bit helpless to let the one using the term to realize that in all probability his or her results will be disappointing. The same is true for “systematic approach” and “systemic approach.”
