This year, the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) bestowed three special honorary awards that recognize outstanding individuals for their significant contributions to human performance technology (HPT) and to the Society itself. These awards include the Honorary Life Member Award, Thomas F. Gilbert Distinguished Professional Achievement Award, Distinguished Service Award, the Geary Rummler Award for the Advancement of Performance Improvement, and the Kaufman Award for Societal Impact. ISPI is pleased to announce this year’s recipients: Darlene M. Van Tiem, CPT, CPLP, PhD, James L. Moseley, CPT, EdD, Joan Dessinger (posthumously), Dr Robert O Brinkerhoff, Anne Apking, CPT, Margaret Mari Novak, CPT, and Frances Hesselbein. Honorary Life Member Award

DarleneVanTiemDarlene Van Tiem, PhD, CPT, CPLP

Darlene Van Tiem is on the faculty of Capella University, primarily chairing and mentoring doctoral dissertations. She is an associate professor emerita and former coordinator of the graduate-level Performance Improvement and Instructional Design program, School of Education, University of Michigan – Dearborn. Previously, she was the human resources training director at AT&T (Ameritech) Yellow Pages (responsible for Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin); and prior to that, curriculum manager for the General Motors Technical Curriculum, including training General Motors suppliers. Darlene was the international ISPI President (2009 – 2010) and an international ISPI board member from 2006 to 2011.

Darlene has been a long-term and consistent curator of the knowledge and principles that make up performance improvement. As an influential thought leader, Darlene is the living embodiment of the performance improvement model. She is seen by her colleagues and learners as a leader and problem solver who systematically attacks problems through the lens of performance improvement. Countless times, she has connected colleagues and learners to other performance improvement specialists in an effort to raise the bar on their work results.  Those who work with her learn about the field of performance improvement not only from her written work but also by watching her expertly employ performance improvement research, strategies, and tools to move organizations forward. Darlene is a very popular dissertation mentor who has a stellar reputation for working with mentees to craft impactful studies that positively affect the bottom-line goals of a variety of organizations.

Darlene has shared her views with a variety of industries through print and presentations. She was lead author, with James Moseley and Joan Dessinger, of three award-winning books: Fundamentals of Performance Improvement: Optimizing Results through People, Process, and Organizations (2012); Fundamentals of Performance Technology: A Guide to Improving People, Process, and Performance (first edition 2000, second edition 2004); and Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People and Performance through Performance Technology (2001). The 2001 book (Performance Improvement Interventions) was also published in India, and the 2012 book (Fundamentals of Performance Improvement) was translated into Mandarin and published in China.

Darlene has been a long standing contributor to ISPI. Her contributions include serving in elected leadership positions and on committees at the international and chapter levels and presenting at conferences and sponsoring students. She has been and continues to provide a voice and be an advocate for ISPI in academic and industry circles.

JMoseleyJames L. Moseley, CPT, EdD
James L. Moseley, CPT, EdD, LPC, CHES, is associate professor at Wayne State University’s College of Education Instructional Technology Program. He is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Michigan, a certified health education specialist, and a Certified Performance Technologist. Jim teaches and advises doctoral students in program evaluation, performance improvement and consulting, curriculum development, and adult learning. He is the recipient of many honors and awards including the 2012 Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award in the Social Sciences, Business, and Education and the 2012 Kathleen Reilly Koory Endowed Faculty Development Award from Wayne State University. Jim was co-editor with Joan C. Dessinger of the ISPI/Wiley Handbook of Improving Performance in the Workplace,Volume 3: Measurement and Evaluation. He is co-author with Darlene M. Van Tiem and Joan C. Dessinger of the award-winning companion books, Fundamentals of Performance Technology: A Guide to Improving People, Process, and Performance 1st and 2nd editions) and Performance Improvement Interventions: Enhancing People, Processes, and Organizations through Performance Technology. Jim recently co-authored with Van Tiem and Dessinger Fundamentals of Performance Improvement: Optimizing Results through People, Process, and Organizations, 3rd edition. He has also co-authored with Dessinger Confirmative Evaluation: Practical Strategies for Valuing Continuous Improvement and Training Older Workers and Learners: Maximizing the Workplace Performance of an Aging Workforce. Jim holds six graduate degrees including MA, MSLS, MEd, MSA, EdS, and EdD. He holds certificates in high school teaching, health administration, and gerontology. Jim is a member of ISPI and ASTD and is frequently invited to present at local, regional, national, and international conferences. He is a former co-editor of the Performance Improvement journal.

Joan DessingerJoan Conway Dessinger, Ed.D, CPT (posthumously)
Joan Conway Dessinger, CPT, EdD was editor of Performance Improvement journal. She was also founder and senior consultant with The Lake Group, a performance improvement consulting firm, and an adjunct faculty member in the Wayne State University Instructional Technology Graduate Program. Joan co-authored Confirmative Evaluation: Practical Strategies for Valuing Continuous Improvement  and Training Older Workers and Learners: Maximizing the Workplace Performance of an Aging Workforce and co-edited Handbook of Improving Performance in the Workplace, Volume 3: Measurement and Evaluation with James L. Moseley. She also co­authored Fundamentals of Performance Technology  and Performance Improvement Interventions with James L. Moseley and Darlene M. Van Tiem. Fundamentals, Interventions, Confirmative Evaluation, and Training Older Workers and Learners all received ISPI Awards of Excellence in Instructional Communication. Joan was also a contributor to Distance Training, Performance Improvement Intervention: Instructional Design and Training, Sustaining Distance Training,2007 Pfeiffer Annual: Training, and the 3rd edition of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology. She presented at local, national, and international conferences. Joan was a general practitioner who applied all the phases of performance improvement in a variety of sectors from nuclear power to healthcare, from manufacturing to education.

Thomas F. Gilbert Distinguished Professional Achievement Award

Robert O. Brinkerhoff, EdD, is an internationally recognized expert in evaluation and training effectiveness. He is the winner of the ASTD 2007 Exceptional Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance award and the 2008 Neon Elephant award for creative contributions to workplace learning. He has provided consultation to dozens of major companies and organizations in the United States, South Africa, Russia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia.

Robert is creator of the innovative Success Case Method for evaluation of training, author of 16 books on evaluation and training, and a keynote speaker and presenter at hundreds of conferences and institutes worldwide. Scores of leading corporations and agencies ranging from Dell Computer and Nike to the World Bank and Central Intelligence Agency have adopted his methods and tools for training effectiveness and evaluation.

Robert earned a doctorate at the University of Virginia in program evaluation where he also coordinated a “street academy” for disadvantaged youth. He is currently a principal consultant and alliance partner with Advantage Performance Group and BTS, Inc. and professor emeritus at Western Michigan University.

Robert’s work experience includes a five-year stint as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, a carpenter, charter-boat mate in the West Indies, grocery salesman in Puerto Rico, and factory laborer in Birmingham, England where he saw the original Beatles .

Distinguished Service Award

Anne Apking 2015Anne Apking, CPT

After graduating from Western Michigan University with a master’s degree in Organizational Psychology, Anne M. Apking, CPT, continued her professional development journey by joining ISPI (NSPI back then.

Initially, Anne got to know the organization by simply attending chapter meetings and the Annual Conference, building her professional network all the while. Once she got her ISPI “sea legs,” Anne began making presentations and getting more involved. Since those early days, Anne has explored and experienced nearly every facet of ISPI.

After winning the Outstanding Instructional Intervention Award in 1991, with an initiative for Steelcase Inc., Anne joined a group of ISPI thought leaders to develop the first offering of what is now known as the Principles & Practices of Performance Improvement Institute. She was among the inaugural group of Certified Performance Technologists. In 2001, Anne published High Impact Learning with Dr. Robert O. Brinkerhoff. This book was awarded Outstanding Instructional Communication from ISPI in 2004.

Much of Anne’s support for ISPI has been in collaboration with insightful and inspirational members. Among the highlights of the committee work she has been engaged in include the Thomas F. Gilbert Award (2005 and 2006), Board Nominations (2010 and 2011), and the University Case Study Competition (2013). But without a doubt, redesigning the entire 2014 THE Performance Improvement Conference experience from front to back with Lisa Toenniges (ISPI President) and April Davis (ISPI Executive Director) was the most challenging and rewarding endeavor so far. Using the four cornerstones of the conference attendee’s experience: Learn, Connect, Celebrate and Enjoy, Anne, Lisa, and April tinkered with every nuance of the conference that the budget would allow. From PechaKucha to Performance Tech Tools & Tips to Yoga and beyond, it was Anne, Lisa, and April’s aspiration to make the most of every conference moment.

Without question, volunteering requires deep investments in time, energy, creativity, and intellect. However, for Anne, the opportunities to connect and learn through ISPI have repaid this investment several times over, and with interest.

Geary Rummler Award for the Advancement of Performance Improvement

This award was established in honor of Geary Rummler, a lifetime member, significant supporter, and valued contributor to ISPI and the profession. It is awarded to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated and reflect the work and life of Geary. The award honors his legacy and advancement of both HPT and ISPI’s principles and practices. This year, ISPI is proud to recognize Margaret Mari Novak, CPT.

From her roots in Cleveland, Ohio, Margaret Mari Novak, CPT, has had a career that can only be described as eclectic and challenging. Educated at Oberlin College, and later Western Michigan University–with gratitude and respect to her mentor Dale Brethower–she had an aptitude for seeing how the pieces did or did not fit together. Before embarking on her master’s degree, Mari enrolled in the U.S. Peace Corps in the mid-1970s.  This was to be the first of her travels to over 100 lands, initially as a journeyer and later as a performance advisor.

In the early 1980s, Mari joined her 30-year partner (and soon husband) Steven J. Kelly in the launch of KNO. Immersed immediately into a nuclear plant construction job, she began a multi-decade long specialization in the energy sector. During these years, she trained with Geary Rummler and became well-versed in application of the Anatomy of Performance for assessments.

With the Velvet Revolution and the fall of communism, KNO relocated in 1990 to Prague in then Czechoslovakia. After the peaceful split, KNO founded two local firms in Prague, Czech Republic, and Bratislava, Slovakia, where KNO has been headquartered the past 20+ years. Mari’s focus became primarily development in transitional societies. Under her leadership, KNO executed numerous contracts for the U.S. government, World Bank, and EU initially supporting reforms in the former Soviet Union. This work, initially geared toward training in the 1990s, quickly transformed into performance focus. Mari introduced the HPT methods and approaches to include the value propositions of Geary Rummler and other theorist and master practitioners into that space called “capacity building” in the development world. An early champion of institutional reforms by creating opportunities for sustainability, she worked with government ministries, nonprofit organizations, and public-private initiatives. Mari was instrumental in promoting the performance technology emphasis that a decade later became institutionalized in the U.S. Agency for International Development.

With the completion of reforms in much of Central Europe, Mari travelled further afield kicking off an ambitious KNO support role for a USAID project in Rwanda in 2012. In the fall, she began a five year effort in Vietnam supporting a local team providing institutional performance improvement in the expanding non-governmental space.

Mari is a high energy personality, dynamic presenter, and confidante of senior officials around the globe. She has published numerous articles on performance improvement in development and presented the results at U.S. and European conferences. Currently residing on the Atlantic coast in south Ireland, Mari is making time between assignments to co-author a book on Performance Assessment.

Roger Kaufman Award for Societal Impact

This award recognizes the continuous achievement of measurable positive societal impact by an individual or organization. This year’s award goes to Frances Hesselbein.

One of the most highly respected experts in the field of contemporary leadership development, Frances Hesselbein is the President and CEO of The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute, founded as The Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management and renamed in 2012 to honor her legacy and ongoing contributions. Frances was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States of America’s highest civilian honor, by President Clinton in 1998 for her leadership as CEO of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. from 1976-1990, as well as her service as “a pioneer for women, volunteerism, diversity, and opportunity.” Her contributions were also recognized by the first President Bush, who appointed her to two Presidential Commissions on National and Community Service.

From 2009-2011, Frances served as the Class of 1951 Chair for the Study of Leadership at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. She is the first woman, and the first non-graduate to serve in this chair. Also in 2009, the University of Pittsburgh introduced The Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. The Academy’s aim is to produce experienced and ethical leaders who will address critical national and international issues and advance positive social and economic initiatives throughout the world.

Frances serves on many nonprofit and private sector corporate boards, including Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, the Bright China Social Fund, and U.C.S.D. Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, and the Center for Creative Leadership’s Alliance Advisory Council. She served as the Chairman of the National Board of Directors for Volunteers of America from 2002-2006. In December 2013, Volunteers of America honored Frances with the Maud Ballington Booth Legacy Award for a lifetime of pioneering social change.

Frances is the recipient of 21 honorary doctoral degrees. She is editor-in-chief of the award-winning quarterly journal Leader to Leader and is the co-editor of 27 books in 29 languages. Frances has traveled to 68 countries representing the U.S. She is the author of Hesselbein on Leadership, My Life in Leadership and most recently, More Hesselbein on Leadership
